So commoners had plenty of reason to hate Sulla. Then he purged supporters of Marius, who had been a hero to the average Roman. So when you say he "fought for the republic", to the average Roman, Sulla fought for the ultra-elites of Rome. The spirit of their laws no longer meant shit, only whatever they could twist the letter of the law to mean. This of course came after Sulla had already died, but you get the idea. It was an obvious, cynical attempt to obstruct Caesars reforms. It was the Consul's legal right to declare holy days and there were no specific laws forbidding this, but no one had even declared even close to that many holy days, let alone that many consecutively. I'm talking like 8 straight months of Holy days. So Julius Caesar's co-Consul, a man loyal to the Senate, simply declared every single day remaining in his and Caesar's Consular term to be a holy day. So while many poor and hungry Romans were screaming for change, the Senate ignored them, then when some change was introduced through mostly legit legal channels, the senate killed the men pushing those policies and began to resort to more and more cynical ways of denying any form of change.įor example, there was an obscure law that forbade any voting on legislation on Holy days. While the common Roman fought and died in defense of Rome, the Senatorial class bought up their farmlands while they were away and replaced paid labor with slave labor that was only availible because those common romans had rounded up those slaves in their last war. The Senatorial class held all the power, all the land, all the wealth. Sure it was a republic, but it was an Oligarchic republic. Well as for your assumption that "fighting for the republic" is a good thing, many common Romans were, at this point, furious with the system of government.
